SURPRISE COSTS — THE LARGER PATTERN

THE LARGER PATTERN

FOUR CATEGORIES. ONE FAMILIAR ASSUMPTION.

A room, a fare, a rental quote and a cruise price describe different parts of travel.

Each can feel more complete than it really is.

HOTELS & RESORTS

The displayed room price may not answer every question about taxes, resort charges, deposits, parking, meals or cancellation conditions.

AIRLINES

The fare may cover transportation while baggage, seats, changes, onboard choices and route conditions remain separate.

RENTAL CARS

The quote may not settle questions about deposits, holds, fuel, insurance choices, location charges or return conditions.

CRUISES

The fare may open the voyage while gratuities, drinks, excursions, connectivity, specialty dining and onboard spending remain outside it.

THE SHARED QUESTION

WHAT DID I BELIEVE THE FIRST NUMBER HAD ALREADY INCLUDED?

None of these examples proves that the first price is false.

Each simply shows why the first number and the whole trip can be different questions.

Looking closer does not make the decision for you. It gives you the chance to decide with a clearer view.

Different parts of travel. The same useful habit: ask what the first number includes—and what still sits outside it.
