THE SHARE SIDE OF TRAVEL™

A wheelchair user and her friend sharing a pastry at a seaside café.

THE POSSIBILITY ATLAS™

Accessible travel

“Accessible,” the email said. Rosa asked what that meant at the bathroom door.

An imagined human possibility.

Her friend Theo looked up.

“You haven't even asked about the view.”

“I'd like to reach the view.”

He grinned and moved the laptop closer.

Rosa used a wheelchair and disliked being congratulated for wanting a weekend away.

She wanted what Theo wanted: a room that suited her, somewhere good to eat and a little sea air.

Their planner, Lina, asked Rosa which details mattered to her. Rosa had a list. It was specific for a reason.

They requested measurements, current photographs, transfer details and confirmation from the providers. One attractive property couldn't answer enough of the questions. They let it go.

Another replied carefully, then corrected an earlier answer about a threshold.

Rosa appreciated the correction more than the cheerful first email.

They reviewed what would work, what would need another arrangement and what remained uncertain. Rosa made the choice.

At the destination, a temporary barrier interrupted their planned waterfront route.

Theo began offering ideas too quickly.

Rosa held up a hand.

“First, let me see.”

They asked the local information desk about the current alternative. It was longer but suitable for her.

Along the way, they found a small café neither had noticed on the map.

The owner asked where they'd like to sit.

“There,” Rosa said, pointing toward the open doorway and the water beyond.

Theo ordered a pastry large enough to require a second plate.

“Accessibility question,” she said. “Can you reach all of that?”

He moved the plate between them.

That evening, they stayed by the promenade until the lamps came on.

Rosa took a photograph of Theo failing to eat the pastry elegantly.

He took one of her laughing.

Back home, someone asked whether the trip had been inspiring.

“The pastry was excellent,” she said.

She sent Theo a message about the next place they might try.

Then she began a fresh list of questions.
