THE POSSIBILITY ATLAS™

The first real vacation after a difficult season

The suitcase smelled faintly of the lavender she'd packed four years ago.

An imagined human possibility.

Claire opened it on the bed.

A luggage tag lay inside. So did a folded scarf and a list written in handwriting she recognized from a different season of her life.

Sunscreen. Book. Comfortable shoes.

She sat down.

For a while, she didn't pack anything.

The past years had filled themselves with appointments, caregiving and arrangements made for other people.

Even after the busiest months ended, she kept living as though another urgent call might arrive.

Her husband, Paul, suggested a few days away.

“I'm not sure I'd know what to do,” she said.

“We could start by doing very little.”

She smiled, but when they began looking, she found reasons to stop.

Too far. Too much planning. An inconvenient week.

Paul closed the laptop.

“What's the part that feels difficult?”

Claire looked toward the phone beside her.

“Leaving.”

They talked about what needed arranging at home, who could help and how they would stay in contact. They chose somewhere close enough for a manageable journey, with a quiet room and no ambitious itinerary.

She still almost canceled.

Then she put the comfortable shoes into the suitcase.

On the first afternoon, she checked her phone six times before finishing a cup of tea.

Paul didn't tell her to stop.

He asked whether she'd like to walk.

The path followed the shore. A small dog ran past carrying a stick much larger than its owner seemed to appreciate.

Claire laughed.

The sound surprised her.

At a bench, they sat while the sea moved in and out over dark stones.

There was nothing they needed to photograph. Nothing they needed to achieve before returning.

That evening, she slept badly. The next night, better.

She read twelve pages of her book, then watched the light change on the wall.

On their last morning, Paul found her outside with a cup.

“Ready to go?”

“In a little while.”

He sat beside her.

Home still held the things they had left there.

The journey had not solved them.

But unpacking felt different from packing.

Claire took out the scarf and hung it by the door. She put her book beside the chair where the morning light fell.

Before closing the suitcase, she found the old list.

Under Comfortable shoes, she added two words.

Go again.
