THE SHARE SIDE OF TRAVEL™

Six friends sharing an informal meal outside a lakeside holiday house.

THE POSSIBILITY ATLAS™

The group that is traveling anyway

By Wednesday, the group chat had three destinations and nobody knew which one they'd agreed to.

An imagined human possibility.

“We're going to the lake,” Ben said.

“Since when?” asked Priya.

“You sent a thumbs-up.”

“To the photograph of your dog.”

Luca scrolled backward.

“I thought we were going to the coast.”

Six friends. Six people already arranging time off. One chat named Definitely Happening This Time.

It was happening.

Nobody could say where.

Their friendship had survived university, moves, partners and jobs whose calendars refused to cooperate.

They had found four days together. It felt too valuable to lose.

Priya suggested a call.

“With an agenda?” Ben asked.

“With an answer.”

They named what mattered. One wanted swimming. One wanted quiet. Luca needed to keep the journey short. Another friend had a budget she stated without apology.

The first house looked perfect until they checked the bed arrangements.

“That is not a bedroom,” Priya said.

“It's a creative sleeping opportunity,” Ben replied.

They moved on.

They compared another booking option, checked the total and asked the property about access and arrival. This time everyone answered the same question before any money changed hands.

Ben sent a thumbs-up.

“Confirm what you're approving,” Priya wrote.

“The house. Not the dog.”

On arrival, Luca discovered he'd packed two left sandals.

From different pairs.

“Creative walking opportunity,” Priya said.

They bought him a simple replacement pair and spent the afternoon beside the lake.

It was quieter than they had imagined. That suited them.

Nobody had to finish a conversation before the next meeting. Nobody needed to summarize six months of life in a birthday message.

One friend spoke about a difficult year. Another listened without checking the time.

Ben, who usually supplied the jokes, sat quietly beside them.

At dinner, they discovered that each person thought someone else was cooking rice.

Priya looked around the kitchen.

“We have learned nothing.”

They made sandwiches and carried them outside.

On the last morning, the lake was still.

Luca stood beside Priya, wearing two matching sandals.

“Same time next year?” he asked.

She watched the others emerge from the house with cups, bags and one missing phone.

“Let's get everyone home first.”

Later, Ben changed the name of the chat.

Definitely Happened.

For once, every thumbs-up meant the same thing.
