THE POSSIBILITY ATLAS™

The retirement journey

On Monday morning, he put on his work shoes before remembering there was nowhere to report.

An imagined human possibility.

David stood in the hallway.

His wife, Helen, looked down at the shoes.

“We could go somewhere.”

“Today?”

“Eventually. You seem ready.”

The farewell had been warm. The empty calendar was less comfortable.

For years, David had talked about a long rail journey. He knew where he'd like to go, but planning it felt oddly harder now that nobody was telling him when he could take leave.

Their adviser, Aisha, asked about pace before distance.

They chose fewer stops, longer stays and a route that left room for a tired day. They reviewed reservations, costs and luggage arrangements rather than assuming every train worked the same way.

David bought a notebook.

On the first page he wrote Departures.

Helen suggested he leave space for arrivals too.

At the first station, he checked the board repeatedly.

On the train, he checked the time.

Then the landscape opened beyond the window: fields, a narrow river, houses gathered around a church.

Helen passed him an orange.

“You can stop supervising it.”

“The train?”

“The day.”

He peeled the orange slowly.

At their second stop, they spent an afternoon in a park instead of completing the list he'd made. A child was trying to fly a kite with no useful wind. David offered advice, received a skeptical look and sat down again.

Helen laughed quietly beside him.

The notebook filled with things he hadn't planned to record.

A good breakfast. A conversation. A bench with a view.

On the way home, he turned to a clean page.

Helen watched him write.

“Another itinerary?”

“Not yet.”

He showed her the heading.

Things worth staying for.

Monday morning, the work shoes remained in the cupboard.

He put on the comfortable ones.
